Coffee, a member of the Rubiaceae
family, got it's name from the Latin name of the plant, Coffea. It
is grown in Brazil, Burundi, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican
Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, Mexico,
New Guinea, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and
Venezuela.
The most common and easily recognized of
the coffee species are Coffea arabica which accounts for about 70%
of the worlds production and which everybody wants; and Coffea
canephora aka robusta, the red-haired step-bean.
The arabica coffee tree matures and
produces it's first crop in about 3 to 4 years, and if left to its
own devices can reach a height of 14 to 20 feet and if well cared
for can be productive for as much as 30 years. Each tree produces
about a pound of coffee each year, so you have to grow zillions of
them to get any volume. No wonder the stuff is expensive.
Arabica trees prefer to grow at an altitude
of over 2000 ft with a fairly stable average temp of 59-75 degrees
F, and an annual rainfall of 60 inches. The robusta trees are
usually grown at lower altitudes and produce a lesser quality
coffee that is more often used in instant coffees.
Naturally, Starbucks is on a perpetual hunt
for good Arabica beans.
